Have you seen this? It’s been floating around so I’m sure it’s been on most of your dashes by now. But in case this is news:
This is a suggested budget for a McDonald’s worker. Source: McDonald’s. First, look: two jobs. Not only that, but this is for a full-time worker.
So what can a full-time worker with a second job afford? Well, I’ll tell you what they can’t afford: heat. I realize this is probably relying on heating assistance programs or something, but I don’t know if those exist outside of specific states and also knowingly paying your workers so little that they have to rely on government assistance is pretty fucked up.
“Monthly Spending Money” is presumably for leisurely things like going to the movies and taking trips out of town and, uh, food. Also missing from this chart: gas or public transportation tickets.
To reiterate, this is for someone working full time at McDonald’s with a second job and no dependencies. And somehow, the real tragedy here is that the ~Small Business Owner~ hand selected by Christ Almighty to rule the downtown Flint, MI McDonald’s franchise might with Divine Right make a little less on every burger? Go fuck yourself.
There are also economic reasons why doubling workers’ pay won’t double the cost and halve the profits or whatever Microeconomix 4 Kidz bullshit the Fox News pundits are pushing, but that would be boring so 4GET IT
Why do Americans have such a hard-on for small business owners? Is it like this in other countries? And in minimum wage discussions, why does their profitability always take priority over the lives of the workers? Shit got me heated.
Winter can be as beautiful as it is frigid – the snow and ice that covers much of the hemisphere in the winter is a informativeness force like no other. We invite you to cuddle up with a cup of tea and your warmest blanket and enjoy some of the most beautiful winter photos out there.
In reality the change of the seasons from winter to summer is one of the best direct indications of the earth’s cosmic movement that we can personally experience. Winter occurs in the Northern hemisphere when the Earth’s northern axis tilts away from the sun. The minute change in distance from, and angle to the sun, creates the drop in general temperature that we experience in the winter. This angle is also the reason why it’s colder the farther up north you go. As the seasons change, you can imagine our beautiful planet slowly rocking back and forth on its axis.
Although some may hate the cold, don’t forget that the winter is a necessary part of our life cycles – these winter landscapes will soon be full of life. Most plants and animals have adapted to the change of seasons in one way or another, and the cold grip of winter allows plants and animals to hibernate or migrate. Some tree seeds, like acorns, will only germinate after they’ve spent the winter on the cold ground.

it’d be cool if there were like Sesame Street style shows for teenagers and Young Adults that teach you things like what to do at the post office and how not to be an asshole at parties

Glenn Broadnax, a 35-year-old black man from Brooklyn, was unarmed on the night of September 14 when NYPD officers shot at him in the middle of Times Square, striking two bystanders.
Instead of apologizing, the New York Timesreports that the city has charged Broadnax ”with assault, on the theory that he was responsible for bullet wounds suffered by two bystanders.”
Broadnax was emotionally disturbed and dodging cars in the middle of the street when officers say he reached into his pocket to grab what they believed was a weapon, prompting them to open fire. His lawyers says he was reaching for his wallet. So, because the NYPD is made up of trigger happy, crappy marksmen who fire at unarmed black people with impunity, Broadnax might spend up to 25 years in prison on trumped up assault charges, which the Manhattan district attorney insisted on.… Meanwhile, the two cops who did the shooting are on desk duty pending an investigation. If the past is any indication, that means they will be back on the streets in no time.
society is such a fucking nightmare
This “cascade red fox" (Vulpes v. cascadensis) was spotted over the weekend at Mount Rainier National Park, in Washington state, USA, sporting a unique coat. The mixed charcoal and reddish coloration is typical of the red fox population in the park.
